Hospitals are extremely expensive places to run. Not only does a hospital need to be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, administrators also need to pay for round-the-clock specialized personnel and the cost of the extremely-high monthly energy bills. It is no wonder that some hospitals and clinics simply cannot pay for those high costs month after month. If it is not a busy hospital, it is common for administrators to close down a wing or the hospital altogether. There are still many pieces of medical equipment, however, that are in working condition when this happens. In most cases, these machines and extra supplies are refurbished and sold to another hospital or clinic as used medical equipment. However, other places decide to donate this equipment to medical schools.

It is incredibly important that there is medical school equipment available for the future doctors of this country to use! As potential patients of these future PhDs, we need to make sure that these individuals are trained property in school so that they are ready to practice once they receive their degrees. Used medical equipment is the perfect tool on which medical students can practice their developing skills.

Medical equipment includes everything from wrap bandages to electrocardiogram machines (EKG machines). Doctors need to know everything from how to apply bandages to stop bleeding to knowing how to interpret basic machines. Most medical doctors start out in the emergency rooms of hospitals where they are on call three nights a week. These individuals need to know how to make decisions in a split second, no matter how tired they feel. Therefore, when their nerves and focus have almost run out, they need to know how to do the most essential basics without even thinking. All the practice they have in medical school will help them become the best doctors they can be before they even make it into the work force.

If you have access to used medical equipment and supplies and would like to help the future doctors of America, or any country worldwide, you should look into donating them to a medical school. The gift of education is one of the best gifts you can ever give!

Just when you’ve completed your medical school interviews and feel that you can sit back and relax because after all the rest is out of your hands, you may be surprised by a wait list notification. What is the next step? What can you do?

First of all, realize that medical school admissions have become increasingly competitive of late especially in this weaker economy. Competitive applicants who would have considered business or law school are now recognizing the stability of a medical career. The number of applicants has again increased this year. Being wait listed is better than being rejected, and thus a positive, despite the anxiety is causes.

A few things you can do:

Send a letter of intent. Let the school know of your continued interest and your new accomplishments. Ensure the letter is well written, streamlined and brief. Be explicit about your enthusiasm, and if the school is your first choice, let the admissions committee know that.

Ask the school if you can set up a second look. A second visit indicates to the institution that you are serious, and it offers you more data in making your decision if you are later offered a spot.

Do not neglect your other options. Don’t focus all of your attention on this institution to the exclusion of others: Ensure you are well-prepared for upcoming interviews at other medical schools.

Plan for last minute notice. At some schools applicants are offered slots off the wait list throughout the summer. I’ve even heard of acceptances being offered the day before medical school was to begin. Would you be able to change your living situation, move your personal belongings and uproot if this were to happen?

Finally, consider working with a professional who can substantially improve your letter of intent and assist you with mock interviews.

Medical school admissions consulting companies come in a variety of forms. Some are bigger businesses that focus on admissions to several types of graduate programs not just medicine. Others are smaller and provide a medical focus, but have a pool of consultants of varying quality. Finally, elite companies offer both the medical focus and a highly experienced consultant who works one-on-one with clients. These professionals are ex-admissions officers from highly respected medical institutions. They have the inside knowledge of how medical admissions work, providing individualized guidance to optimize applicants’ personal statements, medical school applications and interview skills.

When choosing a medical school admissions consulting company, a candidate should verify the company’s references and research its consultants. It is best if the company does not assign written materials to outside editors who cannot be evaluated. Elite companies that offer both the medical focus and a highly experienced consultant who works one-on-one with clients offer a large advantage for pre-medical applicants, especially during these competitive times.

Going to medical school is not an easy job. On your behalf, it requires a serious commitment and an involvement on all levels of the person, intellectual, financial and emotional. What is cost of medical education, the cost of obtaining a medical degree can be $300,000 at the most including living expenses. In fact, the average medical graduate accumulates as much as $100,000 in debt.

Medical school ranking is very important aspect for medical and health related students. In World, there are lot of medical schools which are known for world-class facilities, top-notch faculty and numerous research publications. However, there is no medical school, famous or not, who has a monopoly on providing an unbeatable medical education. Basically medical school ranking is separated into two lists.
1- best medical schools in terms of research
2-best medical school in terms of primary care

In Research category we have schools which show capacity to invest in and produce medical knowledge while primary care refers to the training of medical students regarding precisely that treating and caring of patient and primary care.

Before actually sharing the list of medical schools here it is important to mention that it is possible that some excellent medical schools may be missing in this list. You should keep in mind that it’s a matter of ranking and what characteristics are used to make it. It does not mean that if a school is ranked low in this medical schools list, the doctors coming from these schools are not good and qualified.

Here are the lists of best medical schools in World and United States, for research and primary care separately.

Best 10 medical schools (primary care)

1. University of Washington
2. Oregon Health & Science University
3. University of California San Francisco
4. Mich. State U. Coll. of Osteopathic Medicine
5. University of Minnesota Duluth
6. University of California San Diego
7. University of New Mexico
8. University of Wisconsin Madison
9. University of Iowa (Roy J. & Lucille A. Carver)
10.University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Best 10 medical schools (research)

1. Harvard University
2. Johns Hopkins University
3. Washington University in St. Louis
4. Duke University
5. University of Pennsylvania
6. University of California San Francisco
7. Columbia U. College of Physicians and Surgeons
8. Stanford University
9 University of Michigan Ann Arbor
10. Yale University

The most prestigious medical school in the United States is probably the Harvard Medical School. It was founded in the eighteenth century. This school has produced Nobel Prize winners, spearheaded the development of the most modern technologies and pioneered breakthroughs in almost every aspect of medicine health and science. It is said that their acceptance rate is very low (round about 5%) and students need an average MCAT score of 11.7.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is another excellent research medical school. It was founded in 1893, it also boasts of the same honors and qualifications like Harvard medical school. Another top medical schools are Duke Medical School and Stanford University.

Jeff for more random stuff, my blog is: www.bostonmedicalstudent.wordpress.com PS I wanted to point out something important: that the opinions expressed in this post are not necessarily those of Harvard Medical School, its affiliated institutions, or Harvard University. Also, I’m just a medical student, so my posts are hopefully conversation starters, but only conversation starters not medical advice. If my posts intrigue you, please read more about the topic and discuss about it with your doctor. I’d be happy to send you the information in the journal articles I talk about. Best wishes!
Help answer the question about medical school
medical school?
im taking kinesiology at York university and was just wondering if it is a good program if i want to get into medical school

Absurdist HMS graduation speech 2005 by Greg Feldman.
Help answer the question about medical school
After high school should I go to university abroad, then go to medical school back at home?
After high school I would like to be a doctor, but I want to experience somewhere else in the world. So I was thinking I should maybe go to university to get my bachelors degree in California (I live in Canada) or England or somewhere; then come back to Canada for medical school and the rest of my life. Or do the opposite, stay here for the degree, and go to medical school abroad? Can you move around the world with a medical degree? And how much do you think ALL my schooling will cost? Including my bachelors degree and medical school? Is going to medical school to be a doctor hard? And should I take all three sciences (chemistry, biology, and physics) in high school? Or is that too much?

Students who are planning to apply for admission in a medical school in the near future will always be looking to filter out their list of schools to apply for. The application and admission process can be tedious and time-consuming at best, so having a list of the best medical schools important. Targeting only those schools will save you precious time and effort that can be spent elsewhere. Here’s a look at some important factors in choosing the best medical school.

The institution that a student chooses makes a lot of difference in the future, particularly in terms of career networking. Technically speaking, the more prestigious and credible your medical school is, the better your chances at employment once you become a licensed doctor.

There are several factors in choosing the medical school that is right for you, but the biggest and deal-breaking factor is the curriculum. Interviewing other students and visiting the school itself can ascertain a school’s style and curriculum. Students usually have a choice between traditional approach, which relies heavily on lectures and is composed of a number of distinct courses in different disciplines, or, the newer, non-traditional techniques being employed by a number of schools, such as the PBL or problem-based learning, which decreases the amount of lecture time and focuses more on group exercises and case studies. In choosing based on curriculum, a student needs to rely on preference and subjective opinion, since there is no clear-cut advantage between the different styles of teaching.

The next factor that a student should consider in choosing medical schools is the finances. It is common knowledge that the top medical schools can be expensive, and the quality of education is correlated with the amount of fees a student needs to shoulder. However, schools have their own financial aid packages. Institutions have their own financial aid procedures and it becomes a choice of which ones a student can handle.

The next factor in choosing the right school for you is their location. The farther a school is, the more expensive and tedious the application and interview can be. However, this factor is only temporary because if a student is willing to bear with these things and manages to get accepted, he can choose to stay in a dormitory or a nearby apartment.

As far as personal factors go, it involves introspective choices such as whether the school is in close proximity with family members, which allows regular visits, or whether the climate in the area is a bit harsh for the student’s health, and may even include factors such as the school’s societal functions and if the student likes it. This part is largely dependent on the student himself.

Last, but certainly not the least in factors to be considered is the school’s reputation. A school’s name matters a lot especially in the future as a medical school graduate starts to look for career opportunities. The name of the school on your diploma will also greatly help during the residency match process. In fact, some Duke students recall receiving interview offers literally within minutes of submitting their applications electronically. This is confirmed by many residency program directors.

Ultimately, the choice still rests on student preference, and while not relying on the above can land you in some of the best medical schools that are not in the top list of institutions, whether or not you will succeed still relies on your skill and determination.

Doing well on your medical school interviews depends on your preparation and performance. You wouldn’t take your MCAT without spending countless number of hours studying and practicing questions, right? Likewise, it’s important to spend time preparing for your interview.

The best way to prepare for medical school interviews is to practice with someone and do mock interviews. Get a list of typical interview questions and have your friend ask questions. First, start off easy to get you used to being interviewed. At the same time, have the interviewer observe your gestures and body language. For example, do you slouch? Do you sit up straight? Do you lick your lips after you finish your sentences? Do you say “like” and “umm” when you speak? These are all things you want to work on before you enter the interview room. Interviewers will scrutinize you and you want to do your best to sound as professional as you can.

Once you feel comfortable answering questions, have your friend ask difficult questions and to put pressure on you as you speak. During certain medical school interviews, interviewers will intentionally ask questions that will make you feel uncomfortable. The point is to see how well you do under stress. When you’re a doctor, there will be patients who are rude and obnoxious, but you always have to keep your cool and be professional. Get used to being grilled. Fortunately, not every interviewer will grill you. On the other hand, you don’t know at which interview you will be grilled so it’s better to over prepare.

Finally, I would suggest to doing the following if you have time. Record yourself and study yourself. Try to see if there is anything else you can work out. Do you smile when you talk? Is there energy and sincerity when you speak? If you don’t want to record yourself, then go into your bathroom and talk to yourself in the mirror. Get comfortable looking at yourself as you speak because you want to be as confident as you can when you interview. It was really awkward at first when I looked into the mirror, but the more I did it, the more comfortable and confident I felt when I answered questions about why I wanted to be a doctor.

Once you’re done with your preparation, you have to perform well on the day of the interview. As you’ve probably heard, practice makes perfect. Well, this translates into medical school interviews as well. The more you practice, the better you’ll perform on the day of the interview. Now, things are never predictable. Maybe you’ll get a question you didn’t prepare for. It’s okay, when that happens, keep your cool and don’t panic. Take your time to speak and don’t babble. That’s the worst thing to do and if you really don’t know the answer, admit it. It’s better to admit you don’t know something rather than making answers up.

Also, on the day of the interview, it’s important that you show your energy and enthusiasm. You can talk very well without stuttering and whatnot, but if you have to have heart behind your answers. You have to sound like you really want it. Interviewers will be looking out for this. They don’t want to accept you if you don’t sound like you want be a doctor. Why should they? There are so many applicants out there who would make great doctors. So you have to stand out. You need to look your interviewers in the eye and mean every word you say. You have to convince your interviewers not with just your words, but with your sincerity and passion.

Good luck on your medical school interviews!

Applying for medical school is often the most difficult process for any future medical student. You need to start almost a year and a half early in order to ask for recommendations, take the MCAT exams and prepare your personal statements. It is a struggle to get accepted no matter where you apply because the field is so competitive. For the rest of us, this selective process is great because we only want the best people and most intelligent people to become our doctors and health care givers.

However, this process does the future medical community no good unless these potential doctors have the right instructors, materials, and tools from which and with which to learn. Medical equipment is an incredibly important teaching tool and it helps the doctors of tomorrow better prepare for the real world of medicine.

Medical school is where students learn about the most recent medical techniques and theories. New technology is developed almost everyday and it is difficult to stay abreast of all this new information. The great progress made by technology has made medicine much safer. Doctors can now use imagining machines, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasounds, to find tumors and other abnormalities. These machines eliminate the need for many invasive exploratory surgeries. The problem is much easier to spot and diagnose while looking at an image then by hoping to find something by making an incision.

Many medical schools rely on the charity of other hospitals and clinics to stock up on medical school equipment. Some hospitals that are closing or getting in a shipment of new machines will donate their used and refurbished equipment to medical schools so that medical students can get the maximum amount of practice using the equipment they will need every day in their jobs. It is one thing to learn the theories on how to use a machine and another thing to learn hands-on with the machine itself. The more familiar future doctors are with these machines, the better they will do when they start their residencies.

If you are someone who would like to sell a few pieces of used medical equipment, consider donating them to the nearest medical school. Helping the future physicians learn how to be the best doctors they can be is very important!

The study of medicine is an extremely prestigious and important field. Many children dream of being doctors while they are growing up because they like the idea of being able to help people feel better. As you grow older, you realize all the hard work (and high cost) medical school actually is. The few who can weather the competition in their biology classes during undergraduate studies and survive the medical school application process have proven themselves ready for the grueling eight years of medical study.

Medical school is definitely not for the faint hearted. It is much more than learning what types of medical supplies you need for each type of injury. Depending on what specialty you decide to pursue, you can expect long hours during and after medical school, trying to function with a limited amount of sleep, and needing to remember volumes worth of knowledge. It is a challenge but if you are passionate about medicine and medical equipment in addition to helping people lead longer, healthier lives, then medical school is the place for you!

The application for medical school actually starts long before you are even eligible to study medicine. You need to make sure you spend all four years of college focused. Do not slack off in your academics, even in your non-science courses; you need to have a strong academic record if you want a chance at a top medical school!

Volunteer work and lab experience are the next important factors. Try to volunteer at a hospital or a health clinic. The first benefit of working in a hospital early on is that you have a first hand account of the lives and practices of full time hospital staff. It allows you the chance to not only interact with patients and learn how to read EKG machines, it also affords you the opportunity to talk to different doctors and learn about their medical school experiences.

If you have a strong academic record and can demonstrate your interest in medicine by volunteering at a health clinic, then you are 75% there. The last two important factors are MCAT scores and recommendation letters. As long as you work hard, you will earn yourself a spot in the next year’s medical school class!
